University of London, Birkbeck

Harkwood Services was commissioned by Birkbeck ToddlerLab at the University of London to develop an enhanced second-generation wearable device for advanced research in child development.

The Challenge

Creating a sophisticated, child-friendly wearable system capable of capturing multiple synchronised data streams in real-time while maintaining 8-hour battery life and intuitive operation for research environments. The device needed to balance comprehensive data collection with privacy controls and robust performance.

Our Solution

We designed and manufactured a complete custom electronics solution featuring:

Multi-Sensor Integration

  • 6-axis IMU with accelerometer and gyroscope for motion tracking
  • GNSS positioning for location data
  • Continuous audio recording with configurable privacy muting
  • Synchronized image capture (automatically disabled during audio mute)
  • Proximity sensing to paired devices via Ultra Wide Band radio

Advanced Data Management

  • Real-time time-correlated data capture from all sensors
  • Local SD card storage for reliable data retention and encryption of personally identifiable data
  • Custom Windows/macOS GUI for configuration and session management
  • Support for up to two additional limb-worn IMU sensors per set

Specialized Components

  • Custom remote ECG sensor streaming raw data and heart rate metrics
  • Bespoke mechanical enclosure design optimized for research use
  • All-day battery performance (8+ hours operation)
  • Deployment in synchronized pairs, multi-parent groups, or teacher and student roles for comparative studies
Our Role

Complete Product Development Custom electronics design, embedded firmware development, mechanical enclosure design, and manufacturing coordination—delivering a turnkey solution from concept to deployment.

Research Partnership This second-generation commission demonstrates our ability to evolve solutions based on real-world research feedback and changing requirements.

Project Significance

This repeat engagement with Birkbeck ToddlerLab showcases our expertise in developing specialised research instrumentation where precision, reliability, and user experience are critical for scientific validity. This is essential for both the baby (from 2 months old) and a parent.

We hired Jeremy to manufacture some bespoke recording devices, involving ECG, a microphone, a GPS, and some other elements, that we needed for a research project. We were really happy with the service that we got – Jeremy was always highly responsive and flexible and great at explaining issues. We were particularly impressed at the excellent after-care: even after delivery and payment he was incredibly patient and helpful at resolving operational problems. So really happy to recommend Jeremy! If you’ve got any questions – email s.v.wass@uel.ac.uk.
