USB-PD Chargers for Light Aircraft

Interference-free USB Power Delivery. Designed specifically for continuous operation in light aircraft with either 14 V or 28 V power systems.

Available directly from Harkwood Services on line store.

WHY IT MATTERS IN AIRCRAFT
Generic chargers cause real problems

Generic plug-in USB chargers are not designed for continuous operation and not designed for aircraft. They typically generate significant electrical interference that degrades radio communications, affecting audio quality and squelch behaviour, and can reduce GPS and radio navigation sensitivity.

Poor voltage regulation in cheap chargers can also damage connected devices.

Designed around aviation requirements

Our chargers are fully regulated with a stable output regardless of fluctuations in the aircraft’s electrical system. They’re built for continuous operation, not occasional use, and interference is treated as a design constraint rather than an afterthought.

The same design principles were applied in our Charge2 and Charge4 units, which have been in cockpits since 2014.

TYPICAL USE
Navigation devices

iPads, tablets, and dedicated aviation GPS units running continuously in flight.

Electronic conspicuity

Portable EC devices such as PilotAware.

Phones and comms

Modern phones and aviation apps need reliable power without affecting radio.

USB POWER DELIVERY
USB-PD 3.2 v1.0

Including Programmable Power Supply (PPS) support compatible with modern fast-charging devices. Each port independently negotiates voltage and current with the connected device.

Independent port operation

Unlike many multi-port chargers, power remains uninterrupted on one port when a device is connected to or disconnected from another. Connecting a new device doesn’t affect what’s already running.

PROTECTION AND SAFETY
  • Over-voltage and under-voltage protection — clean shutdown if supply falls outside safe limits
  • Per-port over current protection
  • Fully regulated output
  • Over-temperature protection
  • Reverse polarity protection
  • 14 V and 28 V aircraft systems supported (12–32 V input range)

MOUNTING OPTIONS
Direct panel mount

Fitted directly into a circular panel cutout. Dimensions and tolerances on the specifications page.

Circular instrument cutout

Adapter plate for standard circular instrument panel cutouts. Avoids the need for a cutout in an existing panel.

Version 2 replacement adapter

Specific adapter for replacing an existing version 2 charger unit. Reuses the existing cutout and mounting points.

INSTALLATION

Our chargers can be permanently installed. The installation process is the same for all aircraft. What differs is the regulatory paperwork depending on how your aircraft is registered.

BACKGROUND

The current USB-PD generation charger follows the same design principles as the Charge2 and Charge4 USB chargers, which have been in service in light aircraft cockpits since 2014. The interference and voltage regulation requirements haven’t changed, but the devices being charged have.
